ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INFORMATION
Abstracts are invited that are relevant to reducing the health, social and economic harms associated with all drugs - including alcohol and tobacco. The conference covers all aspects of harm reduction including science and research, policy and practice, and viewpoint and critical commentary.
If you are submitting an abstract please read this important information.
Deadline for abstracts
Abstracts must be received no later than 22nd October 2001.
Confirmation of receipt of abstract will be emailed or posted to the address on the abstract form within 28 days of the submission deadline.
Notification of acceptance or rejection of the abstract will be by email or post to the address on the abstract form by December, 31st, 2001.
This will include information on the type of presentation your abstract has been allocated to.
All abstracts will be peer-reviewed and judged on their relevance to harm reduction, topicality and soundness of method or argument.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE
ABSTRACT PREPARATION:
Abstracts should be a brief summary of your proposed presentation, not exceeding 250 words.
o The abstract should be written in English and should fit into the Abstract form (half of A4 paper - dimension cannot exceed 125 mm /H/ and 180 mm /W/), 10 pts, Times New Roman.
o The title of the abstract should be written in capital letters and should not exceed 70 characters.
o The name(s) of the author(s), the institution(s) and the country should be written below the title. The name of the presenting author should be underlined. Authors are requested to use the enclosed Abstract form and follow the instructions. The initials of the author(s)’ names(s) should be written before the surname(s). Please do not state academic titles or degrees.
o The abstract should be written in one paragraph, single-spaced, without graphics.
o There should be no corrections, smudges, typing errors or misspellings in the text. The author(s) should proofread the text carefully before submitting; it will appear in the Book of Abstracts exactly as written.
o A separate Abstract form should be completed for each submission.
o Indicate on the Abstract form your preferred presentation type i.e. symposium, roundtable, skills sharing, poster session, or poster. Indicate one subject category, which most appropriately describes your topic.

· All presenters/meeting participants are obliged to pay the registration fee.

Abstracts submitted by fax will not be accepted.
We welcome a wide range of presentations. The conference covers science and research, policy and practice, and viewpoints and commentary. We recommend that abstracts are submitted in one of the following formats.
Format I - Science and research
This format is most appropriate for presentation of scientific research findings. The abstract should disclose original findings and should not include statements such as “work in progress” or “results will be discussed”. Use these headings:
Background/Objectives: Study objectives and a description of the problem.
Methods: Methods used or approach taken.
Results: Specific results in summary form.
Conclusions: Discussion, implications, and conclusions.
Format II - Policy and practice
This format is most appropriate for description of policies, programmes, projects, interventions or other activities. Use these headings:
Issue: Identify the specific problems or needs addressed.
Setting: Geographic location, description of where activity takes place, and intended audience.
Project: Description of the policy, intervention, project, or programme.
Outcomes and lessons learned: Summary of outcomes and, lessons learned and implications.
Format III - Viewpoint and commentary
This format is most appropriate for critical analysis and discussion where the author presents a personal viewpoint or commentary on a harm reduction issue, for example regarding ideas and concepts, critical analysis of policy, or politics.
Issue: Identify the specific issue being addressed and analysed.
Approach: describe the approach or method of analysis being used eg historical, comparative.
Key points: Description of the key points of the critical analysis, commentary or viewpoint.
Implications: Summary of the implications of the analysis and argument.
Abstract peer reviewers rely solely on the information that you provide.
Have you:
· included the title of the presentation ?
· included the names of all authors, with the presenter listed first ?
· included your address, telephone and fax numbers and email ?
· used the recommended and appropriate style for writing your abstract ?
· typed the abstract clearly in English using a font style of 10 or 12 point ?
· kept within the 250 word limit ?
· clearly expressed your ideas, evidence and conclusion ?
· asked a colleague to read and comment on your abstract ?
· ticked the preferred presentation type (eg symposium, roundtable, skills sharing, poster session, or poster)?
· ticked the category that your presentation should be considered for (science and research, policy and practice, or viewpoint and commentary) ?
· ticked one subject category that most closely describes your topic ?
· specified your audio-visual requirements ?
